The Night of the Hunter is the first film in our season of 4 films making

up Classic Cinema Season 2 - 1950’s a decade of light and shade. The

only film directed by Scarborough born actor, Charles Laughton.

The Night of the Hunter stars Robert Mitchum playing against type as the

demented preacher, whilst widow Shelley Winters is his unwitting victim.

The legend of silent cinema, Lilian Gish brings gravitas to the role of the

enigmatic Rachel.

Thriller, Drama, Gothic fable this hard to categorise film was described

by the critic Robert Ebert as “one of the greatest of all American films“
